Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rottnest Island Pine - Callitris preissii
A native cypress rather than a true pine, Callitris preissii grows on limestone and coastal sand from Rottnest Island across to the South Australian coast, which tells you most of what you need to know about its tolerances. It carries fine dark green scale-like foliage on a dense conical to rounded crown, and it stands the salt wind that shreds most conifers. Slow, long lived and very tough, it is a shelter and windbreak tree first and an ornamental second.
Why Rottnest Island Pine
Salt Wind Hardiness: It will hold form on a front line coastal block where pines and cypresses brown off on the seaward side.
Limestone and Sand: Thrives on alkaline, shallow and calcareous soils that defeat most trees.
Dense Fine Foliage: Tight scale foliage makes a solid visual and wind barrier without a heavy trunk footprint.
Dry Season Endurance: Deep rooting and low water demand once established, suited to Mediterranean climate rainfall patterns.
Shelter Value: The dense interior is prized nesting and roosting cover for small birds.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Windbreak: Planted in staggered rows it filters onshore wind for the garden behind it.
Front Line Screening: Holds a green face on exposed sandy blocks where nothing else survives.
Formal Conical Feature: Its naturally neat pyramidal outline suits symmetrical or repeated planting.
Habitat and Revegetation: Used widely in coastal restoration across Western Australia and South Australia.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early winter in Mediterranean climates so winter rain drives establishment
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining sand, limestone and gravelly soils, from neutral through to strongly alkaline. It will not tolerate heavy soil that stays wet
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers, then only during exceptional dry spells, as it resents constant moisture at the root collar. Mulch with coarse material and stake young plants on exposed sites until the root plate anchors.
