Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Port Jackson Pine - Callitris rhomboidea
Australia has its own conifers, and this is the most garden-worthy of the eastern ones. Callitris rhomboidea forms a neat, narrow, densely furnished cone of fine aromatic scale foliage, holding its shape without clipping and carrying small woody cones along the branches. It occupies the design role that pencil pines and cypresses do, but on dry, well drained, often rocky ground it does the job with native credentials and none of the canker problems that plague exotic conifers in humid Australian summers.
Why Port Jackson Pine
Natural Conical Form: A tight, symmetrical, narrow habit that needs no shaping to look formal.
Aromatic Foliage: Fine green scale leaves release a resinous cypress scent when brushed.
Drought Hardiness: Naturally occurs on dry rocky ridges and sandy soils and needs very little water once established.
Native Alternative: Fills the pencil-pine role in a design brief that calls for indigenous species.
Persistent Cones: Small knobbly woody cones held on the branches add texture and interest year round.
Ideal Applications
Narrow Screen: Planted in a close row it forms a slim evergreen wall where there is no width for a broad hedge.
Formal Native Garden: Supplies vertical structure and clipped-looking form in an all-Australian planting scheme.
Windbreak on Dry Sites: Tough enough for exposed ridges and inland properties with low rainfall.
Entry and Driveway Markers: Matched pairs or repeated rhythm along a drive give a strong architectural line.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy, gravelly or rocky soils, acidic to neutral; it will not tolerate heavy wet clay or irrigated lawn conditions
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first three months, then taper to occasional deep soaks in dry spells only. Mulch with coarse gravel or bark, avoid rich fertiliser, and accept that this species will not reshoot from bare old wood, so shaping must be limited to light tip work.
