Cape Chestnut - Calodendrum capense
When a mature cape chestnut flowers it stops traffic, and that is not an exaggeration for a tree that carries huge terminal panicles of pink-lilac blossom across an entire rounded canopy in early summer. Calodendrum capense is an African member of the citrus family, and up close the flowers show the fine spotted petals and long curved stamens of that group. It is planted where a broad, dense, well-shaped shade tree is needed and there is genuine room for it to spread.
Why Cape Chestnut
Flowering Display: Large pink-lilac panicles cover the crown in late spring and early summer, one of the best flowering shade trees grown in Australia.
Canopy Shape: The head is naturally broad and rounded with good branch structure, needing little corrective pruning.
Real Shade: Dense foliage casts proper shade over a lawn or paved area through summer.
Urban Durability: It performs as a street and park tree in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane given decent soil depth.
Patience Required: Trees put on frame and foliage first and flowering builds as they mature, so expect a shade tree before a flowering one.
Ideal Applications
Avenue and Street Planting: Uniform habit and a high canopy make it a strong repeated street tree.
Large Lawn Specimen: A single tree on an open lawn is how the flowering display is best seen.
Park and Estate Planting: Scale and longevity suit acreage, schools and civic landscapes.
Rural Homestead Shade: Provides a broad shade canopy near a house on a property with space to give it.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6-7m for a canopy row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8-10m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in mild districts, spring where frost occurs
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, well-drained soil. It resents shallow rock and permanently wet ground, and it needs soil volume to develop its full canopy.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers to build a deep root system, then move to monthly soaks in dry spells. Mulch widely out to the drip line, held clear of the trunk, and shelter young trees from frost for their first few winters, as juvenile growth is more tender than mature wood.
