Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Black Magic Camellia - Camellia japonica ‘Black Magic’
‘Black Magic’ is grown for the darkest red flowers in the japonica range, so deeply coloured that they read almost black in low light, set against unusually heavy textured dark green foliage with a wavy holly like edge. This Camellia japonica is a slower, denser plant than most, which makes it useful where a shade tolerant evergreen with real substance is needed rather than a loose flowering shrub. It flowers through the middle of winter into early spring, when the garden most needs it.
Why Black Magic Camellia
Flower Colour: Very deep red blooms with a waxy substance, distinct from the pinks and reds of common japonicas.
Distinctive Foliage: Thick, dark, undulating leaves give the plant presence even out of flower.
Winter Performance: Flowers through the coldest months when few shrubs are contributing anything.
Shade Tolerance: Prefers filtered light, so it furnishes the difficult shaded side of a house.
Dense Habit: Compact growth means it screens effectively without needing constant clipping.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Screening Hedge: Planted in a row it forms an evergreen privacy screen that flowers in winter.
Woodland Understorey: Sits beneath high branched trees alongside azaleas, hellebores and ferns.
Formal Espalier: The dense branching trains well flat against a shaded wall or fence.
Large Container Feature: Long lived in a generous pot on a sheltered, shaded terrace.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a solid evergreen screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m as individual shrubs
Best Planting Season: Autumn through to early spring, avoiding summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, humus rich, free draining soil. Camellias will not tolerate lime, compacted clay or being planted too deeply, so keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
Establishment Care: Water consistently through the first two summers, particularly from midsummer when next season's flower buds are forming. Mulch with composted bark or leaf litter, protect from hot afternoon sun and drying wind, and feed with a camellia and azalea fertiliser after flowering.
