C.M. Wilson Camellia (Ball) - Camellia japonica ‘C.M. Wilson’
‘C.M. Wilson’ is an anemone form camellia, which means a ring of broad outer petals surrounding a raised centre of narrow petaloids, and the blooms are large, light pink and produced across a long mid season. It arose as a colour sport within the ‘Elegans’ group, and it inherits that family’s spreading, relatively slow growth. Clipped as a ball, Camellia japonica of this type holds a broad rounded shape naturally, so far less corrective pruning is needed than with an upright cultivar.
Why C.M. Wilson as a Ball
Anemone Form Bloom: The raised centre of petaloids gives the flower depth and a texture the formal doubles do not have.
Broad Natural Habit: Its spreading growth suits a rounded clipped form without constant correction.
Long Mid Season: Flowering carries through the middle of winter across several weeks rather than one short burst.
Large Blooms: Individual flowers are substantial, so even a modest plant makes a display.
Shade Reliability: It performs in morning sun or filtered light, where clipped sun lovers thin out.
Ideal Applications
Low formal edging: A row of broad spheres defines a bed edge along a shaded path.
Entry containers: A matched pair in generous pots gives structure and winter colour at a doorway.
Shaded parterre: Repeated clipped forms bring geometry to a south facing garden.
Under established trees: It keeps density beneath a high canopy where most formal shapes go bare inside.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1m to 1.3m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.6m to 2m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, free draining, organically rich soil between pH 5.5 and 6.5. Avoid alkaline run off from paths, render and concrete, which shows quickly as yellowing between the leaf veins.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist through the first two summers, watering deeply rather than lightly and often. Mulch with composted bark to 75mm, keep it clear of the stem, and do all reshaping in early spring straight after the last flowers drop.
