Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Debbie Camellia - Camellia japonica ‘Debbie’
‘Debbie’ is one of the most dependable pink camellias in Australian gardens, opening clear rose-pink peony form blooms through the depths of winter when little else is doing anything. The bush is upright and vigorous with glossy dark foliage that takes clipping well, and unlike many doubles the spent flowers drop cleanly instead of browning on the plant. Grown here as Camellia japonica, it wants the classic japonica position of morning sun and afternoon shelter.
Why Debbie Camellia
Winter Bloom: Flowering runs through the coldest months, generally from late June into September depending on district.
Clean Flower Drop: Finished blooms fall whole rather than hanging on and discolouring, so the bush stays presentable.
Upright Vigour: It grows away faster than most japonicas, closing a hedge line in fewer seasons.
Glossy Screening Foliage: Dense dark leaves hold to the base and give a solid green face year round.
Shade Performance: It flowers well in positions that receive only a few hours of direct light.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Hedge: A flowering screen along a south facing fence where sun lovers will not thrive.
Under Tree Border: Planted beneath high canopy where dappled light suits it.
Narrow Side Garden: An upright habit fits the strip between two houses better than a spreading shrub.
Entry Container: A large pot in a sheltered courtyard, brought into focus by winter flower.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring, ideally in bud or just after flowering
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, humus rich and free draining. Never plant deep, keep the top of the rootball level with the surrounding soil.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers and never let the rootball dry while buds are setting in late summer, or they will drop. Mulch with composted pine bark or leaf litter kept clear of the stem.
