Fran Homeyer Camellia (Ball) - Camellia japonica ‘Fran Homeyer’
Shaped into a ball, this japonica does the job of a clipped evergreen and then flowers through the coldest part of the year, which is the argument for using camellias in formal work at all. ‘Fran Homeyer’ produces large blooms in the pink range across the middle of the camellia season, carried on the dense, slow, small branched growth typical of the better garden japonicas. Camellia japonica tolerates shearing well, and because it flowers on wood made the previous summer, the timing of the cut matters more than the severity.
Why Fran Homeyer as a Ball
Winter Bloom on a Clipped Form: Very few plants that hold a sharp shape also flower in July and August.
Dense Branching: Close internodes and small side shoots let the sphere stay solid rather than hollow inside.
Large Flowers: Individual blooms are substantial enough to read from a distance against the dark foliage.
Low Maintenance Shape: Slow annual extension means one shaping cut a year is usually enough.
Shade Performance: It keeps foliage density in positions that get only part of the day’s sun.
Ideal Applications
Formal shaded courtyard: Repeated spheres provide geometry where sun loving topiary fails.
Entry statement pots: Large containers either side of a door hold the shape and the flowering season.
Structure within a mixed bed: A single ball anchors loose planting of hellebores, ferns and hydrangeas.
Path edging in shade: A run of low spheres gives a defined edge along a shaded walkway.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1m to 1.2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5m to 2m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, acidic, humus rich soil at pH 5.5 to 6.5. It will not thrive in limey soil or where concrete and render wash alkaline water into the bed.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer so buds set and hold rather than dropping in autumn. Mulch to 75mm with composted bark kept away from the stem, feed with an azalea and camellia fertiliser after flowering, and reshape at that same time.
