Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Fishtail Camellia - Camellia japonica ‘Kingyo Tsubaki’
This is a camellia bought for its leaves. ‘Kingyo Tsubaki’ is an old Japanese selection of Camellia japonica whose leaf tips split into three lobes, so every glossy dark leaf finishes in a shape like a goldfish tail, which is what the Japanese name records. The rose pink flowers through winter are a genuine bonus rather than the main event, and unlike most camellias this one holds interest at close range for the whole year.
Why the Fishtail Camellia
Leaf novelty: Every leaf ends in a three lobed fishtail, a feature no other common evergreen shrub offers.
Year round interest: The foliage carries the plant for the eleven months it is not flowering.
Winter blooms: Rose pink single to semi-double flowers open through the coldest months.
Shade capability: It flowers reliably in part shade and under high canopy.
Collector value: A long established Japanese cultivar that is uncommon in Australian gardens.
Ideal Applications
Close viewing positions: Beside a path, door or seat where the leaf shape can actually be seen.
Shaded feature shrub: A single plant lifts a dull shaded corner year round.
Mixed evergreen border: Its foliage texture breaks the monotony of plain glossy leaves.
Large containers: Acid potting mix in a pot suits courtyards with unsuitable garden soil.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn for preference, or late winter to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic soil around pH 5.5 to 6.5, rich in organic matter, free draining
Establishment Care: Keep the shallow roots evenly moist through the first two summers with deep weekly watering, and mulch with composted pine bark or leaf litter. Feed with a camellia fertiliser after flowering, and shelter the plant from hot dry afternoon wind which scorches the leaf tips.
