Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Royal Velvet Camellia - Camellia japonica ‘Royal Velvet’
‘Royal Velvet’ produces large deep red semi-double blooms through the middle of winter, when the rest of the garden has very little to say. Like all Camellia japonica, it flowers generously in shade, which is the quality that makes the species so valuable on the cool southern side of a house. The dark glossy foliage carries the plant for the other nine months and clips into a dense evergreen wall if that is what the space requires.
Why Royal Velvet Camellia
Deep Red Semi Double Blooms: Large flowers with a rich saturated colour that holds up well against dark foliage.
Mid Winter Timing: Flowering falls in the coldest weeks, filling the gap between autumn sasanquas and spring shrubs.
Glossy Dark Foliage: Thick leathery leaves give year round structure and a formal finish.
Shade Performance: It flowers well in positions that receive only morning sun or bright filtered light.
Long Lived Framework: Camellias improve for decades and become permanent structure in a garden.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Hedge or Screen: A close planted row makes a dense evergreen boundary that flowers in winter.
Wall Espalier: Trained flat on an east or south facing wall it uses very little ground depth.
Large Tubs: Performs well in generous pots of acidic mix, useful where garden soil is alkaline.
Woodland Border: Sits naturally under high deciduous canopy with hellebores and ferns beneath.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn through early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic at pH 5.5 to 6.5, humus rich, moist and free draining; set the top of the root ball level with the surface, never below
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, since next winter's buds are set during the warm months and a dry summer means a poor flowering. Mulch to 75mm with leaf litter or pine bark held clear of the trunk, feed with a camellia and azalea fertiliser after flowering, and do any pruning immediately once the last flowers drop.
