Asakura Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Asakura’
Sasanqua camellias earn their place in Australian gardens by flowering through autumn, taking far more sun than the japonicas, and clipping into a clean evergreen wall. Camellia sasanqua ‘Asakura’ is one of the upright, willing growers in the group, carrying soft pink blooms against small glossy dark leaves on a plant that responds well to shaping. It is a common choice where a narrow evergreen screen has to look deliberate rather than shaggy.
Why Asakura Camellia
Autumn flowering: Blooms from March into winter, filling the gap between the last of the summer colour and the japonica season.
Sun tolerance: Unlike japonica camellias it will hold good foliage colour in most of a day's sun in temperate districts.
Upright growth: The naturally erect frame makes it straightforward to train flat against a wall or into a formal hedge.
Fine texture: Small leaves give a tighter, more refined clipped face than large-leafed evergreens.
Clean litter: Sasanqua petals shed individually and break down quickly rather than dropping whole spent blooms.
Ideal Applications
Boundary screen: Planted along a fence line it delivers a 3m evergreen screen in a bed less than a metre deep.
Espalier: Trained on wires against a wall or under a window where depth is limited.
Formal hedge: Clipped twice yearly to a crisp 1.5 to 2.5m hedge around a courtyard or pool surround.
Understorey layer: Grown beneath high-canopy deciduous trees where it takes filtered light and winter sun.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring, avoiding planting into the peak of summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, humus-rich, slightly acid soil around pH 5.5 to 6.5. Camellias will not tolerate lime or waterlogging, so raise the bed on heavy clay
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist through the first two summers, as sasanquas drop buds under drought stress. Mulch with composted bark to 75mm kept clear of the stem and feed with an acid-suitable fertiliser after flowering.
