Autumn Moon Camellia (Espalier) - Camellia sasanqua ‘Autumn Moon’
Trained flat against a frame, a sasanqua camellia solves the problem of a bare wall in a narrow space. This one is grown as an espalier, with the branch structure already established on a horizontal or fan pattern, so it occupies barely 300mm of depth while covering a wall or fence panel. Camellia sasanqua is the sun-tolerant camellia, which is what makes it usable on the sort of west or north facing wall where a japonica would burn.
Why Autumn Moon Camellia
Trained form: Supplied already worked onto a flat plane, so the framework of the espalier is set rather than something you have to build over years.
Narrow footprint: A finished depth of around 300 to 400mm makes it viable in side passages and against boundary fences.
Autumn flowering: Flowers open through autumn and into early winter, filling the gap after the summer garden has finished.
Small glossy leaf: The fine, dark, lustrous foliage of the sasanqua group looks disciplined when clipped, unlike coarser wall shrubs.
Sun tolerance: Handles more direct sun than other camellias, which widens the range of walls it can be used on.
Ideal Applications
Side passage walls: Turns a dead corridor into a green surface without narrowing the walkway.
Fence screening: Covers timber or metal boundary fencing with evergreen cover at eye height.
Courtyard feature panel: Read as living joinery when set against a rendered wall.
Privacy between neighbours: Provides year-round screening in the narrow strip beside a driveway or path.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m between espaliers for continuous wall cover
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m where each panel is to read separately
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring; avoid midsummer
Soil & Drainage: Slightly acidic, humus-rich and free draining. Camellias dislike lime and will yellow in alkaline or compacted soil, so improve heavy ground with compost before planting.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist for the first two summers, watering deeply twice a week in hot weather rather than lightly every day. Mulch with pine bark or leaf litter, keep the trunk clear, and tie new growth to the frame as it extends.
