Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Early Pearly Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Early Pearly’
Timing is the argument for this one. It opens white informal double blooms from late summer, several weeks ahead of most sasanquas, and keeps flowering well into mid autumn. Camellia sasanqua ‘Early Pearly’ also holds a tighter, more erect frame than the arching cultivars, which makes it the easier choice where a hedge has to stay inside a set width.
Why Early Pearly Camellia
Season Start: Buds begin opening from late February in warm coastal districts and through March further south, ahead of the main sasanqua flush.
Bloom Form: Loose white doubles show a boss of gold stamens and carry a light scent on still mornings.
Erect Frame: Natural growth is upright, so less tipping is needed to hold a narrow line than with spreading cultivars.
Fine Face: Small leaves on short internodes give an even, close textured surface when clipped.
Coastal Nerve: It handles salt laden wind better than japonica camellias, useful within a few streets of the beach.
Ideal Applications
Formal front hedge: Clipped to 1.8 to 2.2m it screens a street frontage while flowering through autumn.
Between houses: Its narrow habit suits the standard 1.5m gap along a suburban side boundary.
Understorey planting: It grows well beneath established deciduous trees, taking the winter sun and the summer shade.
Picking bush: Cut stems hold in a vase for several days, so a spare plant doubles as a supply for indoor arrangements.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn, or early spring in cold districts once frost risk has passed
Soil & Drainage: Acidic at pH 5.5 to 6.5, enriched with compost and freely draining; raise the bed on heavy clay
Establishment Care: Give each plant a slow soak twice weekly through the first summer rather than frequent light sprinkles. Mulch to 75mm with pine bark or leaf litter and hold off any fertiliser until the first flush of new growth appears.
