Edna Butler Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Edna Butler’
A vigorous, upright autumn camellia that carries large soft pink double blooms from around March into winter. Camellia sasanqua ‘Edna Butler’ is grown for scale as much as flower: it builds a taller, fuller shrub than most sasanquas, which makes it useful where a boundary needs a genuine 3m evergreen screen rather than a low hedge. Like all sasanquas it accepts far more sun than the japonicas, so it can be used on exposed western and northern fence lines.
Why Edna Butler
Screening Height: Reaches a useful 3 to 4m, which is where sasanquas beat most flowering hedge shrubs.
Large Blooms: Soft to mid pink loose double flowers, noticeably bigger than the small single sasanquas.
Sun Hardy: Holds foliage colour and flowers in full sun in most temperate Australian gardens.
Vigour: Establishes and fills out faster than the slower japonicas, so a hedge closes up sooner.
Responds to Clipping: Takes a hard annual trim after flowering and reshoots densely from old wood.
Ideal Applications
Tall Boundary Hedge: A row along a fence gives evergreen privacy plus a long autumn flowering season.
Espalier Against a Wall: Its vigour and flexible growth make it one of the better camellias for a trained wall panel.
Wind Filter: Dense branching breaks up wind across an exposed courtyard or pool surround.
Background Shrub: Sits at the back of a mixed border providing a dark evergreen backdrop year round.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m centres for a solid hedge, 1.5m for an informal screen.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m as repeated specimens.
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring.
Soil & Drainage: Acidic to neutral, enriched with compost, and free-draining. Avoid limey soils and any position where water sits after rain.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, tapering to weekly once growth is strong. Mulch 75mm deep with pine bark, keep it off the stems, and feed after flowering with a camellia and azalea fertiliser to drive the flush that carries next season's buds.
