Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Egao Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Egao’
The name translates from Japanese as smiling face, and the flower is the reason: large semi double blooms in clear rose pink, considerably bigger than the typical sasanqua. Camellia sasanqua ‘Egao’ is often catalogued under the hiemalis group, and like others in that group it flowers a little later and holds its blooms better through wet weather. The plant itself is vigorous with a slightly open branch structure.
Why Egao Camellia
Flower Size: Blooms open well above the size of a standard sasanqua, reading clearly from across a garden.
Weather Resistance: The heavier petal substance means autumn rain does not turn the display to brown mush overnight.
Open Framework: Longer, more spaced laterals make it a better subject for training over a frame than for tight box style hedging.
Espalier Aptitude: Those long flexible shoots tie down easily onto wires against a wall or fence.
Bird Traffic: Honeyeaters work the open stamens through autumn, which the fully double cultivars do not offer.
Ideal Applications
Wall espalier: Trained flat it delivers a large flowered autumn display in beds too narrow for a shrub.
Informal screen: Left unclipped it fills a boundary with a looser, more natural profile.
Courtyard feature: A single plant against a rendered wall carries the display at eye level.
Mixed shrub border: It gives structure and height behind lower evergreen planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, humus rich and well drained; avoid lime, builders rubble and any spot where water pools after rain
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers, checking that moisture reaches below the original root ball rather than just wetting the mulch. Prune immediately after flowering finishes, since buds for next autumn are set on the growth that follows.
