Jean May Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Jean May’
'Jean May' is one of the most widely planted sasanqua camellias in Australia, valued for large soft shell-pink double blooms carried heavily through autumn when little else is flowering. Unlike the japonica camellias, Camellia sasanqua takes real sun, holds a dense small-leaved habit and clips willingly, which is why this cultivar has become a default choice for hedges, espaliers and narrow screens. The flowers shatter cleanly rather than browning on the bush, so the plant stays tidy through its display.
Why Jean May
Autumn flowering: Blooms heavily from around March into May in most Australian gardens, filling the gap before winter.
Soft pink doubles: Large ruffled double flowers in a pale shell pink, noticeably bigger than most sasanquas.
Sun tolerance: Handles full sun far better than japonica camellias, opening up hedging and espalier uses.
Dense small foliage: Glossy dark leaves on tight branching give a solid clipped face.
Responds to shaping: Takes hard pruning after flowering and reshoots readily, so it holds a formal line.
Ideal Applications
Formal hedging: Clipped to 1.5 to 2.5m it makes an evergreen boundary that flowers.
Espalier on walls: Trained flat on wires it occupies barely 400mm of depth against a fence or wall.
Narrow side screens: Suits the tight corridor between a house and a boundary fence.
Feature shrub in part shade: Grown unclipped it becomes a broad informal flowering shrub.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 800mm to 1m for a dense clipped hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m as individual shrubs
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring; autumn planting lets roots establish before summer
Soil & Drainage: Acidic to neutral, humus-rich, free-draining soil; add compost and avoid lime
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer, keeping moisture consistent while buds are forming in late summer or they will drop. Mulch to 75mm with pine bark, feed with a camellia and azalea fertiliser after flowering, and prune immediately after the last blooms rather than later in the season.
