Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rose Ann Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Rose Ann’
Rose pink is one of the harder colours to find in autumn flowering shrubs, and this cultivar sits squarely in it. Camellia sasanqua ‘Rose Ann’ builds a dense medium sized bush with the usual small, dark, hard sasanqua leaf, and flowers from mid autumn on growth made during the preceding season. It is a working hedging and screening plant rather than a collector's specimen.
Why Rose Ann Camellia
Colour Depth: The rose pink reads strongly against dark foliage and does not bleach out the way pale pinks can in bright light.
Flowering Window: Bloom runs through the middle of the sasanqua season, roughly April to June in most temperate gardens.
Screen Density: Close branching from low on the plant means it screens to ground level rather than opening out at the base.
Renovation: Old or neglected plants can be cut back hard into bare wood in early spring and will reshoot.
Pest Record: Sasanquas are largely untroubled here apart from occasional scale, which is managed with a horticultural oil spray in early spring.
Ideal Applications
Boundary screen: A single row gives a flowering evergreen barrier of about 2.5m with minimal maintenance.
Foundation planting: Clipped low it softens the base of a wall without swamping windows.
Colour block in a mixed bed: Grouped in threes it supplies autumn colour when perennials are cutting out.
Pool surround: Small leaves and clean petal drop mean less debris in the water than broad leaved shrubs.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic and free draining with plenty of organic matter; lime, concrete washings and poor drainage all cause yellowing
Establishment Care: Soak thoroughly at planting and then twice a week through the first summer, always at the root zone rather than over the foliage. Top up mulch each spring and keep lawn and competing groundcover 300mm back from the stems.
