Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Camellia tsaii
Most camellias in cultivation are bred for the flower. Camellia tsaii is grown for the plant: small narrow leaves, arching wiry stems and bronze new growth on a fine-textured evergreen that behaves more like a large-leaved shrub than a traditional camellia. The flowers are small, white and lightly fragrant, scattered through the canopy in late autumn and winter, which suits designers who want camellia toughness without the heavy formality of a japonica bloom.
Why Camellia tsaii
Fine foliage: Narrow, slightly wavy leaves give a soft texture rare among evergreen screening plants.
Arching form: Weeping outer stems soften built edges and read well against rendered or brick walls.
Bronze flush: New growth emerges coppery bronze before hardening to deep green, giving two colours at once.
Small scented flowers: Numerous white blooms with yellow stamens, carrying a light fragrance up close.
Shade capable: Performs in genuine part shade where sun-dependent screening plants thin out and go bare at the base.
Ideal Applications
Shaded screen: A dependable evergreen wall along a south-facing boundary or between close-built houses.
Woodland underplanting: Massed below established deciduous trees in cool and temperate gardens.
Textural hedge: Clipped loosely to 1.5 to 2m where a soft face is wanted instead of a hard formal edge.
Collector's specimen: Grown as a single free-form shrub in a courtyard where its weeping habit can be seen from all sides.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in temperate zones
Soil & Drainage: Moist but free draining, organic-rich, acid to neutral soil. Avoid limey soils and any site that holds water after rain
Establishment Care: Water regularly through the first two summers so the root ball never dries out completely, as this species resents drought while young. Maintain a 75mm layer of leaf litter or composted bark mulch and shelter it from hot dry wind in its first season.
