Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Canistel - Pouteria campechiana
Known widely as eggfruit, Pouteria campechiana produces glossy yellow orange fruit with dense, dry, sweet flesh closer in texture to baked sweet potato or custard than to a juicy tropical fruit. The tree itself is compact by tropical fruit standards, tolerant of poor and shallow soils including limestone, and unusually wind firm, which makes it a practical choice for exposed coastal blocks in Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Why Canistel
Heavy cropping: Mature trees carry large numbers of fruit, typically ripening through the cooler months.
Unusual fruit texture: The flesh is dense and custard like, used in desserts, smoothies and baking rather than eaten as a juicy fruit.
Wind and salt tolerance: It stands up to coastal exposure better than most tropical fruit trees.
Broad soil tolerance: It grows on sands, clays and shallow limestone soils where fussier species fail.
Frost tender: It requires a frost free climate, restricting it to tropical and warm subtropical Australia.
Ideal Applications
Tropical home orchard: A productive addition alongside mango, lychee and sapote.
Shade tree with a crop: The dense evergreen canopy gives real shade as well as fruit.
Coastal Queensland garden: Wind firmness makes it usable where softer fruit trees shred.
Mixed edible screen: Planted in a row it forms a productive evergreen boundary.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Start of the wet season in the tropics; spring to early summer in the subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of almost any type, from sand to light clay; it will not tolerate prolonged waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first two dry seasons to build the root system, then reduce as the tree becomes self sufficient. Mulch widely and keep the trunk clear, and feed lightly several times a year during the warm growing months rather than in one heavy application.
