Black Bean - Castanospermum australe
The Black Bean, or Moreton Bay Chestnut, is one of the great shade trees of the east coast rainforest belt. Castanospermum australe carries a dense dome of glossy dark pinnate foliage on a stout trunk, and in late spring to early summer it produces clusters of orange and yellow pea flowers directly on the older branches and trunk, followed by heavy woody pods. It is planted where a large evergreen canopy is wanted for genuine shade rather than seasonal effect, and it holds that canopy year round unlike the deciduous figs and jacarandas it competes with.
Why Black Bean
Dense evergreen shade: Holds a full leaf canopy all year, delivering real summer shade over lawns and outdoor areas.
Cauliflorous flowers: Orange and yellow flower clusters appear straight off the trunk and old wood, unusual in cultivated trees.
Glossy foliage: Deep green pinnate leaves stay clean and lustrous, giving a subtropical look without a tropical climate.
Australian rainforest native: Indigenous to coastal Queensland and northern New South Wales, so it is suited to humid east coast conditions.
Long lived: A slow maturing, long lived tree that becomes a landmark specimen rather than a short term filler.
Ideal Applications
Parkland shade tree: Planted as a single specimen on large lawns and in schools and parks where the canopy has room.
Rainforest restoration: Used as a canopy species in subtropical revegetation and habitat plantings.
Large acreage feature: Set well back from buildings on rural blocks where its scale and vigorous roots are not a constraint.
Street and avenue tree: Used in wide verges in Queensland and northern New South Wales where there is space for the crown.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 6m for a closed canopy line
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn into warm soil, avoiding cold snaps while young
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture-retentive loam that drains freely. It responds strongly to rich soil and dislikes dry, shallow or compacted profiles
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers, since young plants are sensitive to both drought and frost. Mulch to 100mm and shelter juveniles from frost and cold wind for their first two winters in marginal districts. Note that the seeds are toxic to people and animals, so site it away from play areas and stock.
