Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Yankee Point Californian Lilac - Ceanothus ‘Yankee Point’
Where most flowering shrubs go upright, ‘Yankee Point’ runs sideways: a low, wide, glossy-leaved evergreen that covers ground and then disappears under mid-blue flower in spring. Ceanothus is a dry country plant that resents kindness, so it belongs on banks, gravel and coastal sand rather than in an irrigated bed. Expect a decade or so of strong performance rather than a lifetime tree.
Why Yankee Point Californian Lilac
Spreading Habit: It stays under a metre high while running two to four metres wide, smothering weeds as it goes.
Spring Blue: Dense clusters of mid to deep blue flower cover the whole plant for several weeks from about September.
Pollinator Value: The blossom is worked hard by bees for the entire flowering period.
Coastal Hardiness: Glossy leathery leaves resist salt wind on exposed sites.
Dry Preference: It actively dislikes summer water, which is exactly why it suits unirrigated slopes.
Ideal Applications
Embankment Cover: Mass planted on a batter to bind soil where mowing is impossible.
Coastal Gardens: A flowering groundcover for sandy front line positions.
Wall Spill: Planted above a retaining wall so the branches cascade over the face.
Low Water Verges: Nature strips and median beds that receive no irrigation at all.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for continuous groundcover
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is not negotiable. Sandy, gravelly or rocky soils suit it, while heavy clay and summer irrigation cause sudden collapse.
Establishment Care: Water lightly through the first summer only, then stop altogether in all but the harshest inland sites. Use gravel or coarse bark mulch and avoid fertiliser, particularly phosphorus rich products.
