Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Atlas Cedar - Cedrus atlantica
Cedrus atlantica comes from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, and it grows into one of the truly monumental conifers available in Australia. Young trees are stiffly conical with an upswept leader, then broaden over decades into the flat-topped, tiered silhouette that makes old cedars so recognisable in cool-climate parkland. It is planted where there is space and time, on rural properties, in large estate gardens and in civic parkland, not in suburban backyards.
Why Atlas Cedar
Ultimate scale: Reaches heights very few garden conifers approach, which is precisely why it is used as a landmark tree.
Tiered branching: Horizontal branch layers develop with age, giving the mature tree its distinctive architecture.
Needle colour: Short needles in tight whorls range from green to a strong glaucous blue depending on the individual.
Drought hardiness: Mountain origin means it handles dry summers and poor rocky soils once its roots are down.
Frost tolerance: Fully hardy for tableland, alpine-fringe and cool inland gardens.
Ideal Applications
Rural landmark tree: A single specimen on open ground becomes the defining element of the property.
Parkland and civic planting: Long-lived and structurally sound, suited to public open space with room to grow.
Cool-climate estate gardens: Traditional in the large gardens of the Southern Highlands, Adelaide Hills and central Victoria.
Windbreak backbone: Used at the rear of a shelter planting on exposed rural sites.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m in a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12 to 15m; site at least 10m from buildings, drains and paving
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Deep, well-drained loam or gravelly soil, neutral to slightly alkaline. It will not tolerate a waterlogged or perpetually wet root zone.
Establishment Care: Water deeply and infrequently through the first two or three summers to drive roots down rather than out. Mulch widely, stake only if the site is very exposed, and never remove the central leader.
