Albery’s Red Christmas Bush - Ceratopetalum gummiferum ‘Albery’s Red’
The colour everyone photographs is not the flower. Small white flowers open in spring, then the sepals swell and change, and by December Ceratopetalum gummiferum ‘Albery’s Red’ is carrying a canopy of deep red. This selection was made for the depth and reliability of that colour, which in seedling grown Christmas bush can be anything from washy pink to dull rust.
Why Albery’s Red Christmas Bush
Christmas Colour: The enlarged red calyces hold for six to eight weeks through December and January, well after the true flowers have finished.
Cut Stems: It is grown commercially for the cut flower trade because the coloured stems last well in water.
Sandstone Country: It is at home on the sharply drained, low nutrient sandy soils of the Sydney basin and the coastal escarpment.
Coastal Exposure: Established plants handle salt bearing wind, making it a workable choice for beachside native gardens.
Pruning Discipline: Cut hard straight after the red fades. Left alone it goes leggy and open, and the display thins each year.
Ideal Applications
Small feature tree: A single trunked specimen fits a suburban front garden and peaks exactly when the house is full of visitors.
Informal native screen: Planted in a line and tip pruned annually it makes a dense 3m barrier.
Coastal native garden: It sits naturally with banksias, westringia and coastal rosemary on sandy ground.
Picking hedge: A row grown purely for cutting gives an annual supply of Christmas stems without stripping a feature plant.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil, acidic and low in phosphorus; it fails on heavy wet clay and resents standard high phosphorus fertilisers
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers, then only in extended dry spells. Mulch with coarse leaf litter or gravel rather than rich compost, and feed only with a native formulation low in phosphorus.
