Lavender Twist Weeping Redbud (Standard) - Cercis canadensis ‘Covey’
This is a grafted standard, so what arrives is a clear straight trunk topped by a head of contorted, weeping branches that twist back on themselves as they fall. In very early spring, before a single leaf appears, the bare framework is studded with rosy magenta pea flowers held directly against the wood, a habit Cercis canadensis shares with almost nothing else in cultivation. Heart shaped leaves follow and turn soft yellow in autumn. It is chosen when a garden needs a sculptural small tree with a genuinely tiny footprint.
Why Lavender Twist
Cauliflory: Flowers emerge straight out of the trunk and old branches, not just the shoot tips, which is what gives the tree its density of bloom.
Trained standard form: The graft sits at a set height and the weeping head develops above it, so the final height is largely fixed and predictable.
Contorted structure: The zigzagging, twisting branch pattern is an ornamental feature in its own right for the six months the tree is bare.
Very small footprint: A mature head spreads only 2 to 3m, so it works where a conventional ornamental tree would crowd the space.
Three seasons of interest: Spring bloom, summer heart shaped foliage and clear yellow autumn colour follow in sequence.
Ideal Applications
Entry statement: A single standard beside a front door or gate gives instant formality without the bulk of a hedge or a large tree.
Matched pair: Two flanking steps or a driveway entrance reinforce symmetry in a formal front garden.
Large planter: The restrained root system suits a substantial pot or raised planter box on a terrace.
Small garden centrepiece: Underplanted with low evergreens, it carries a courtyard bed on its own.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not suited to hedging. Space a formal row of standards 2.5 to 3m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m from structures, allowing the weeping head to hang clear
Best Planting Season: Autumn or late winter while dormant, before bud movement
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moderately fertile, well drained loam. Neutral to slightly alkaline soils are fine, but it will not tolerate sitting water
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist through the first two summers with deep soakings rather than frequent light watering. Mulch generously but leave a clear collar around the stem, and remove any suckers or shoots arising below the graft as soon as they appear so the standard does not revert.
