Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Eastern Redbud - Cercis canadensis
Before a single leaf appears, Cercis canadensis lines its bare grey branches, and often the older trunk wood itself, with clusters of small magenta-pink pea flowers. The tree that follows is quite different in character: broad heart-shaped leaves on a low, wide, layered frame that turns soft yellow in autumn. It is a small understorey tree by nature, so it is one of the few deciduous flowering trees genuinely happy in dappled light rather than needing an open sunny position.
Why Eastern Redbud
Cauliflory: Flowers emerge directly from old branches and trunk as well as young twigs, an unusual effect for a temperate tree.
Leaf Shape: Broad, clean heart-shaped foliage gives a distinctive silhouette all summer.
Small Scale: At 4 to 6m it fits comfortably in a courtyard or small suburban garden.
Part Shade Flowering: It still flowers respectably under high canopy, where most blossom trees will not.
Layered Branching: Horizontal tiers of growth give the tree structure and interest through winter.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard specimen: A compact feature tree for a small paved or gravelled space.
Woodland edge planting: Sited at the margin of established trees, mimicking its natural understorey habit.
Small garden focal point: One tree carries an entire front garden through late winter and spring.
Mixed shrub border: Provides height and early colour above hellebores, bulbs and shade perennials.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for an informal grouping
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter to very early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, well drained loam, tolerant of a range of pH, will not accept waterlogged or compacted ground
Establishment Care: Redbuds resent root disturbance, so plant once, plant properly and leave them alone rather than relocating later. Water deeply through the first two summers, mulch to keep the root zone cool, and prune only to remove crossing or damaged wood immediately after flowering.
