Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Oklahoma Redbud - Cercis canadensis var. texensis ‘Oklahoma’
The Texas redbuds are what you plant when the ordinary eastern redbud finds your site too hot and too dry. Cercis canadensis var. texensis 'Oklahoma' carries thick, glossy, almost waxy heart shaped leaves that shrug off reflected heat, and it flowers in a deeper, more saturated wine red than the species, smothering bare branches in early spring. It is the pick of the group for inland and western Australian gardens with long hot summers.
Why Oklahoma Redbud
Heat Tolerance: Bred from a dry country variety, so it copes with reflected heat off paving and walls.
Flower Depth: Blossom is a deep wine red rather than the paler pink of common redbuds.
Leaf Substance: Thick glossy leaves resist scorching and hold good colour through summer.
Compact Size: Slightly smaller and denser than the eastern species, suiting tight sites.
Drought Hardiness: Develops a deep root system and needs little water once established.
Ideal Applications
Hot Inland Courtyard: One of the few flowering deciduous trees that thrives in that setting.
Street and Verge Planting: Modest size and tidy habit suit narrow nature strips.
Dry Garden Feature: Combines with olives, rosemary and grasses in a low water scheme.
Paired Entry Planting: Matched trees flanking a gate give a strong spring statement.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m in a planted row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soils including alkaline and limestone derived ground, but never heavy wet clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers to build depth into the root system, then reduce sharply. Mulch well, stake lightly for the first year only, and keep pruning to an absolute minimum.
