Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Judas Tree - Cercis siliquastrum
In early spring the Judas tree flowers directly out of its bare branches and even out of the old trunk wood, covering the whole frame in magenta-pink pea flowers before a single leaf appears. That trait, called cauliflory, is what separates Cercis siliquastrum from every other small flowering tree available in Australia. It follows the display with rounded blue-green heart-shaped leaves, buttery autumn colour, and flattened seed pods that hang on into winter, so it earns its place across four seasons rather than two weeks.
Why Judas Tree
Flowers on Bare Wood: Blossom emerges straight from trunk and old branches, not just the twigs, for an unusually dense display.
Distinctive Leaf: Rounded, blue-green, heart-shaped leaves are unlike anything else in a temperate garden.
Multi-Stem Character: Often grows with several leaning trunks, giving an aged, sculptural look quite early.
Dry Climate Suitability: A Mediterranean species that copes with hot dry summers once its roots are down.
Seasonal Sequence: Spring flowers, summer foliage, yellow autumn colour and persistent purple-brown pods in winter.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Feature Tree: Small enough for enclosed spaces where the trunk flowering can be seen close up.
Mediterranean Garden: Sits naturally with olive, cypress, rosemary and gravel paving.
Understorey Beneath Large Trees: Tolerates the high dappled shade at the edge of a bigger canopy.
Spring Blossom Grouping: Planted in threes for a concentrated block of magenta at the start of the season.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam or sandy loam, neutral to alkaline, with no tolerance of heavy wet ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers and then only in prolonged dry spells, as this tree resents constant moisture. Choose the final position carefully and plant once, because cercis has a deep taproot and dislikes root disturbance or transplanting after it has settled.
