Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Chamaedorea atrovirens
Sold in Australia as a hardy dark green shade palm, this Chamaedorea is one of the Central American understorey species closely allied to the better known Chamaedorea oblongata, and the two are often listed under each other's names. It produces slender green canes and pinnate fronds of a notably deep, matte green, and it will hold that colour in positions that bleach or burn most other small palms. Its value in a design is simple: reliable tropical texture at eye level in a spot where sun never reaches.
Why Chamaedorea atrovirens
Depth of colour: The foliage is a darker green than most small palms, which makes it useful against pale walls and light coloured paving.
Shade specialist: It is at its best in filtered to full shade and needs no direct sun at all.
Slim canes: Narrow stems mean it fits into tight beds and between structures without needing width.
Low maintenance: Beyond removing spent fronds and keeping water up in summer, it asks for very little.
Indoor tolerance: Like its relatives it copes with interior conditions better than almost any other palm group.
Ideal Applications
Dark side passage: Fills the narrow shaded corridor between a house and a fence where nothing else will grow.
Understorey layer: Planted below established palms and trees to green up the lower metre of a tropical bed.
Courtyard pots: Grouped in containers on a shaded terrace for instant softness against hard surfaces.
Interior planting: Suits offices and living areas with steady bright indirect light.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 1m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m apart
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Humus rich, free draining and consistently moist, with plenty of composted organic matter worked in
Establishment Care: Water two to three times weekly through the first summer and never let the root zone dry out completely. Apply a slow release palm fertiliser in spring and maintain a deep leaf litter style mulch, which mimics the forest floor conditions the plant is built for.
