Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pacaya Palm - Chamaedorea tepejilote
Ringed, bamboo-like green stems and long arching pinnate fronds give Chamaedorea tepejilote a light, airy presence in shade, and it is by far the largest of the commonly grown chamaedoreas. In Central America it is cultivated as a vegetable crop for its young male flower buds, sold as pacaya, but in Australian gardens it is used purely as a shade palm where something taller than a parlour palm is needed without losing the fine texture.
Why Pacaya Palm
Bamboo-like stems: Prominent leaf scar rings on smooth green stems give a strong vertical, jointed line.
Height in shade: It reaches several metres in conditions too dark for most palms of that size.
Aerial roots: Older plants develop a distinctive stilt-like cone of roots at the stem base.
Fine frond texture: Long, evenly spaced leaflets create a soft, tropical layer without visual weight.
Narrow footprint: The slim stem allows planting close to walls, paths and other plants.
Ideal Applications
Deep shade planting: Fills the dark corner of a courtyard or the south side of a building.
Understorey beneath larger palms: Layers neatly under taller canopy palms in a tropical bed.
Narrow side passage: The vertical habit and small base suit corridors between buildings.
Indoor and atrium use: Long tolerant of low light in large containers under cover.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres for a soft shade screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. It needs shelter, humidity and protection from frost, and will scorch badly in direct sun or hot dry wind.
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first warm season, keeping the root zone consistently moist but never sodden. Mulch with composted leaf litter, feed lightly with a slow release palm fertiliser in spring and summer, and remove spent fronds at the stem for a clean bamboo-like look.
