Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Watermelon Palm - Chambeyronia macrocarpa ‘Watermelon’
Every few months this palm produces a single new frond that unfurls bright red and stays that colour for a week or two before fading to green. Chambeyronia macrocarpa ‘Watermelon’ adds to that a crownshaft marked and striped in a way that gives the selection its name, so there is something to look at even between flushes. It comes from New Caledonian rainforest and is notably more cold tolerant than its tropical appearance suggests.
Why Watermelon Palm
Red new frond: Each emerging leaf opens vivid red, a display repeated several times a year.
Patterned crownshaft: The marked crownshaft is the distinguishing feature of this selection.
Cold tolerance: It handles cool conditions and brief exposure near zero far better than most tropical looking palms.
Single trunk: It does not sucker, so the footprint stays predictable in a courtyard.
Slow growing: It stays in scale for many years, which suits confined spaces and container growing.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard feature: A single palm carries a small paved space, with new frond colour as the event.
Poolside planting: The clean single trunk and slow litter drop work well beside water.
Rainforest understorey: Beneath established canopy it grows exactly as it does in habitat.
Large container: Its slow rate means years of use in a pot before it outgrows the position.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening palm; group at 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moisture retentive soil with free drainage and plenty of organic matter
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two years, since this palm resents drying out at any stage. Mulch thickly with bark or leaf litter, grow young plants in filtered light and only expose them to more sun once the trunk has formed.
