Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Royal Lee Cherry - Prunus avium ‘Royal Lee’
‘Royal Lee’ is the second half of the low chill sweet cherry equation. This selection of Prunus avium sets firm, dark red fruit in districts where winters are too mild for conventional cherries, ripening just after its partner variety ‘Minnie Royal’ and pollinating it in return. Neither variety crops properly on its own, so the two are planted together, and a pair in a warm climate garden will give you a genuine sweet cherry harvest in early summer.
Why Royal Lee
Warm Winter Cropping: Fruits reliably in mild winter districts where traditional sweet cherries fail to break dormancy evenly.
Firm Dark Fruit: Produces glossy, deep red cherries with firm flesh that hold well after picking.
Pollination Partner: Flowers overlap with ‘Minnie Royal’, so the pair set each other's crop.
Heavy Blossom: A dense white spring flowering that makes the tree worth the space even in a light fruiting year.
Trainable: Accepts espalier and open vase pruning, so the crop stays within reach without ladders.
Ideal Applications
Paired Orchard Planting: Planted within about 15m of ‘Minnie Royal’ so bees can move between the two.
Small Block Fruit Growing: A realistic sweet cherry option on suburban land in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide fringe districts.
Wall Trained Espalier: Flattened against a fence or wall where warmth and shelter improve fruit set.
Blossom Feature: Grown at the front of a productive garden for the early spring flowering.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m for trained or hedgerow planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while the tree is dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam with good depth, mounded up on clay soils, and never a site that puddles after rain
Establishment Care: Give deep weekly waterings through the first two summers and keep the trunk collar dry and clear of mulch. Prune in late summer to shape the framework, and net the tree as fruit begins to colour, since birds will strip a crop in a day.
