Wandiligong Wonder Chestnut - Castanea sativa ‘Wandiligong Wonder’
This is a sweet chestnut selected for Australian conditions, carrying the name of Wandiligong in north east Victoria, the district at the centre of chestnut growing in this country. Castanea sativa makes a broad, heavy limbed deciduous shade tree with deeply veined saw edged leaves, then drops burrs of glossy brown nuts through autumn. It is chosen over an ornamental shade tree because it does both jobs: a genuine canopy for a large lawn or paddock, and a productive nut crop that improves for decades.
Why Sweet Chestnut
Edible Crop: Mature trees set burrs of sweet, floury nuts that ripen and fall through autumn, harvested off the ground.
Deep Summer Shade: The dense canopy throws heavy shade over summer and then lets winter sun through once the leaves drop.
Cold Climate Suitability: It needs real winter chill and thrives in the cool tableland and alpine valley country where many fruit trees struggle.
Autumn Colour: Foliage turns clear gold to russet brown before dropping, a strong seasonal marker on a rural block.
Long Lived: Sweet chestnut is a multi generational tree, productive for well over a century on suitable soil.
Ideal Applications
Home Orchard: Two or more chestnut trees of different cultivars planted together give the cross pollination needed for a reliable nut set.
Rural Shade Tree: A single specimen on a large lawn or near a homestead delivers substantial summer shade within a decade.
Windbreak and Shelterbelt: Rows on the cold side of a property give shelter while producing a crop.
Grove Planting: Groups on a slope suit cool climate properties where a formal orchard grid is not wanted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging tree; shelterbelt and grove rows at 8 to 10m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 15m, keeping well clear of buildings, septic lines and boundaries
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring while the tree is dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining, slightly acidic loam; it will not tolerate lime rich alkaline soils or ground that stays wet, which invites root rot
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, as chestnuts are shallow rooted when young and check badly under drought stress. Mulch a wide ring clear of the trunk, keep grass and weeds off the root zone for the first three years, and stake only if the site is exposed.
