Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
China Gold Bamboo - Bambusa eutuldoides viridi-vittata ‘China Gold’
‘China Gold’ is a clumping bamboo planted for its canes: golden yellow culms marked with fine vertical green stripes, rising in an upright clump that works as a colour feature as much as a screen. Bambusa eutuldoides viridi-vittata widens slowly from a tight crown rather than spreading by running rhizomes, so it sits comfortably along a boundary and needs a setback of only 1 to 1.5m from walls, paving and gutters. It is chosen where a design calls for height, privacy and a strong vertical accent from the one plant.
Why China Gold Bamboo
Striped Golden Culms: Each cane carries its yellow and green pinstripe year round, and the pattern shows most clearly once the lowest side branches are trimmed away.
Clumping Root System: The crown expands gradually from its base with no travelling rhizomes, so no root barrier is required.
Substantial Canes: Its culms are far thicker than those of the small multiplex bamboos, giving it the bulk to screen a second storey outlook.
Light Frost Tolerance: Established clumps accept the occasional light frost of inland valleys as well as coastal heat and humidity.
Taller Each Season: In warm, well watered soil each summer's new culms come up taller and thicker than the last, closing gaps within a few seasons.
Ideal Applications
Coloured Privacy Screen: A row along a side or rear boundary gives tall cover in a warm golden tone instead of a flat green wall.
Facade Feature: A single clump in front of a dark painted wall or timber battens turns the striped canes into the focal point of the elevation.
Colour Contrast Planting: Behind dark leaved cordylines, bromeliads or burgundy foliage, the gold canes lift the colour of the whole bed.
Uplit Night Feature: Garden lights placed at the base pick out the yellow culms after dark.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to late summer, while the soil is warm and the clump is actively shooting
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, free draining loam with added organic matter; it accepts heavier soils provided they do not sit wet
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone well soaked, watering every two or three days through the first summer, because the size of each new season's culms depends on steady water and nitrogen. Feed with a high nitrogen fertiliser in spring and again in midsummer, and keep a generous layer of mulch over the root zone. From the third year, remove old or spindly culms at ground level to keep the clump open and the striped canes on show.
