Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sage Leaf Rock Rose - Cistus salvifolius
A low Mediterranean shrub with soft grey-green crinkled leaves, Cistus salvifolius earns its place on hot dry banks where irrigation is limited and soil is thin. White five petalled flowers with a yellow eye open in flushes from mid spring, each lasting a day and replaced the next morning. It is chosen ahead of lavender or rosemary when a wider, more spreading groundcover mass is wanted.
Why Sage Leaf Rock Rose
Drought Endurance: Once rooted it carries through a dry Australian summer with little or no supplementary water.
Spreading Habit: Low branches layer outward and knit together, covering ground rather than forming a ball.
Poor Soil Tolerance: Rocky, sandy and alkaline soils suit it better than rich improved beds.
Long Flowering: Successive waves of white bloom run from October into December in most temperate districts.
Coastal Resilience: Salt wind and reflected heat from paving are handled without leaf burn.
Ideal Applications
Embankment Planting: Massed on a slope it holds soil and removes the need for regular mowing.
Dry Garden Foreground: Sits well in front of olives, westringia and grasses in a low water palette.
Driveway Verges: Copes with heat radiating off gravel and asphalt where lawn will not persist.
Coastal Foredune Gardens: Used behind the frontline planting for a soft grey layer that tolerates spray.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn is ideal, early spring acceptable in cooler districts
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage essential, sandy or gravelly soils preferred, tolerates alkaline ground and dislikes heavy wet clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer only, then taper off completely, since prolonged wet soil is the main cause of loss. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark and tip prune lightly after flowering to keep the plant dense, avoiding cuts into old bare wood.
