Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Calamondin (Espalier) - Citrus x microcarpa
Calamondin is the citrus that never stops: fragrant white flowers and small round orange fruit are usually on the plant at the same time, through much of the year. The fruit is intensely sour and used for cordials, marmalade and southeast Asian cooking rather than eaten fresh, and it hangs on the branches for months, which is half the ornamental value. Trained flat as an espalier, Citrus x microcarpa turns a sunny wall into a productive, evergreen panel that takes up almost no ground.
Why Calamondin
Near Continuous Cropping: Flowers and fruit overlap through much of the year rather than arriving in one short season.
Small Fruit, Big Display: Bright orange fruit of 25mm to 35mm holds on the tree for months without dropping.
Compact by Nature: It is the smallest growing of the common citrus, which is why it trains and pots so willingly.
Fragrance: Citrus blossom scent carries across a courtyard, and this one flowers repeatedly.
Cold Sensitivity: It is the least cold tolerant part of the picture; a warm wall or a sheltered courtyard makes a real difference in cooler districts.
Ideal Applications
Sunny Wall Espalier: A north or east facing wall gives reflected warmth that lifts both fruiting and frost protection.
Courtyard Productive Planting: Delivers fruit, flowers and evergreen structure in a footprint of well under a square metre.
Narrow Side Garden: Suits the slim beds along a path or driveway where a round headed citrus would not fit.
Ornamental Fruit Feature: Grown as much for the look of the fruit as for the harvest, particularly through winter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2m along a wall for a continuous trained face
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m to 2.5m for separate panels
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn; avoid planting into cold or frosty conditions
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil around pH 6 to 7; citrus will not tolerate wet roots or heavy clay without raised beds
Establishment Care: Water deeply and regularly, especially while fruit is sizing, as irregular moisture causes fruit drop and split. Feed with a citrus fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer, keep mulch and grass well clear of the trunk, and tie in new growth while it is soft enough to bend.
