Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Calamondin - Citrus x microcarpa
Calamondin, or calamansi, is the small ornamental citrus that fruits almost continuously and looks presentable doing it. Citrus x microcarpa forms a dense, upright, small-leaved tree hung with round orange fruit the size of a large marble, sharply acidic and used for juice, marmalade and South East Asian cooking rather than eating fresh. It is the pick where a citrus has to earn its keep visually first, in a pot, a formal pair or a clipped courtyard planting.
Why Calamondin
Near-continuous fruit: Flowers and fruit are usually present together for much of the year in warm districts.
Small scale: Naturally compact and fine-leaved, so it holds a formal shape in a container without constant correction.
Cold tolerance: One of the hardier citrus, taking light frost better than lemons and limes once established.
Culinary use: The juice is a staple souring agent in Filipino and Malaysian cooking and makes an excellent marmalade.
Fragrant blossom: White flowers carry the classic orange blossom scent, produced in repeated flushes.
Ideal Applications
Container pair: Matched plants in pots flanking an entry, kept clipped to a ball or a standard head.
Courtyard feature: A single specimen in a small paved garden where the fruit is on show at close range.
Edible hedge: Planted in a row along a path or fence for a productive, evergreen, waist to shoulder high hedge.
Kitchen garden: Grown near the back door where the fruit is picked a few at a time as it is needed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 3.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, once frost risk has passed in cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy loam with a pH of 6 to 7. Citrus roots rot in heavy wet clay, so plant on a raised mound or in a well built bed if drainage is poor
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer, keeping the root ball moist but never saturated. Mulch to 75mm held well clear of the trunk, and feed with a complete citrus fertiliser in late winter and again in late summer.
