Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Australian Blood Finger Lime - Citrus australasica ‘Australian Blood’
This is the darkest of the finger limes: a selection of our own rainforest citrus with near-black skin and crimson red caviar pearls inside. Citrus australasica is a thorny, small-leaved understorey tree from the rainforest margins of south east Queensland and northern New South Wales, and ‘Australian Blood’ is the cultivar chefs ask for by name because the colour survives on the plate. It is a genuinely productive bushfood plant that also happens to make a fine dense evergreen shrub or small tree.
Why Australian Blood
Crimson Pearls: The vesicles burst deep red rather than the pale green or pink of other selections, giving strong visual impact in food.
Dark Fruit Skin: Finger-shaped fruit ripens almost black, ready from around autumn into winter.
Fine Dense Foliage: Small glossy leaves on a thorny, closely branched frame make a genuinely effective informal screen.
Native Citrus Hardiness: Rainforest origins give it more shade and humidity tolerance than a lemon or lime.
Thorny by Nature: The sharp spines are real, so keep it back from paths, seating and areas used by children.
Ideal Applications
Bushfood Gardens: The centrepiece of an edible native planting alongside lemon myrtle and native mint.
Productive Hedge: Planted in a row it forms a thorny, fruiting boundary that also deters foot traffic.
Courtyard Container: Slow and compact enough for a large pot near a kitchen door.
Understorey Fruiting Layer: Grown beneath taller trees where dappled light mimics its rainforest habitat.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a fruiting hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn while soil is warm; avoid cold wet winter planting
Soil & Drainage: Rich, free draining, slightly acidic soil with good organic content; it will not accept heavy waterlogged clay
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first two summers and keep the root zone mulched but with the mulch pulled back from the trunk. Feed with a citrus fertiliser in spring and late summer, and protect young plants from frost and from harsh full afternoon sun until the canopy thickens.
