Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Marsh Grapefruit - Citrus paradisi ‘Marsh’
‘Marsh’ is the seedless white fleshed grapefruit that most Australian home orchards are built around, and the reason is simple: it crops heavily, the fruit is virtually pip free, and it hangs on the tree for months while the acid softens. Citrus paradisi makes a dense rounded evergreen with glossy dark leaves, so the tree earns its place in the garden even outside the harvest window. Fragrant white blossom in spring is a bonus most people do not expect from a grapefruit.
Why Marsh Grapefruit
Seedless Fruit: Pale yellow flesh with few or no seeds, which is why this cultivar became the commercial standard.
Long Hanging Season: Fruit holds on the tree through winter and into spring, sweetening as it waits, so picking can be spread out.
Fragrant Blossom: Clusters of white spring flowers scent the area around the tree and are self fertile, so no second tree is needed.
Dense Evergreen Canopy: The glossy rounded head works as a screen or backdrop for the whole year.
Heavy Yields: A well fed established tree produces far more than a single household usually needs.
Ideal Applications
Backyard Orchard: A cornerstone tree in a mixed citrus planting with lemons, limes and mandarins.
Warm Wall Espalier: Trained flat against a north facing wall it ripens fruit earlier in cooler districts.
Large Containers: On dwarfing rootstock it performs well in a 500mm or larger pot on a sunny terrace.
Productive Screen Row: Planted in a line it gives an edible hedge along a boundary or driveway.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring in cool districts, autumn or spring in warm frost free areas
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy loam at pH 6 to 7; citrus die quickly in waterlogged ground, so mound 300mm on clay
Establishment Care: Keep a mulched circle at least a metre wide free of grass and weeds, but hold the mulch 100mm clear of the trunk to prevent collar rot. Water deeply once or twice a week through flowering and fruit set, feed with a complete citrus fertiliser in late winter and again in late summer, and protect young trees from frost for the first two winters.
