Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Green Kumquat - Citrus japonica
Kumquats are the smallest and neatest of the productive citrus, and Citrus japonica makes a dense, rounded little tree that carries fruit and glossy foliage at the same time. The whole fruit is eaten, sweet skin and tart flesh together, which is why it earns a place near a kitchen door rather than out in an orchard row. It is also the citrus most often chosen for formal use, because it clips into a ball or standard without sulking.
Why Green Kumquat
Compact habit: Naturally small and dense, so it fits a courtyard, a pot or a narrow bed where a lemon would not.
Long fruit display: Small oval fruit hangs on the tree for months through autumn and winter, colouring slowly.
Fragrance: Small white flowers in spring and early summer carry the classic heavy citrus scent.
Cold tolerance: The hardiest group within edible citrus, coping with light frost that would damage a lime.
Formality: Small leaves and short internodes mean it holds a clipped shape cleanly.
Ideal Applications
Kitchen garden planting: Sited close to the house where the fruit gets picked and used.
Matched pots at an entry: A pair either side of a doorway gives evergreen structure plus seasonal fruit.
Low productive hedge: Planted in a row it forms a fruiting edge to a vegetable garden.
Courtyard feature: Works in small paved spaces that need one plant doing several jobs.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn; avoid planting into cold wet soil in midwinter
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil enriched with compost. Citrus roots rot quickly in heavy wet clay, so plant on a raised mound if drainage is marginal.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week over the first two summers and keep water up during flowering and fruit set to prevent drop. Mulch generously but leave a clear collar around the trunk, and feed with a complete citrus fertiliser in late winter and again in late summer.
