Indonesian Lime - Citrus aurantifolia
This is the small fruited, thin skinned, intensely aromatic lime of Southeast Asian cooking, and it is a different plant from the Tahitian lime most Australians grow. Citrus aurantifolia makes a low branching, thorny shrub or small tree that flowers and fruits repeatedly through the warm months rather than in one defined season. It wants heat and humidity, and it is the first citrus in the garden to show damage when a cold snap arrives, so it belongs in Queensland, northern New South Wales, the Northern Territory or a warm protected coastal courtyard further south.
Why Indonesian Lime
Aromatic Thin Skin: Small fruit with a fine rind and high acid, prized for the perfume of both juice and zest.
Repeat Cropping: In warm climates it flowers in flushes and carries fruit at several stages of ripeness at once.
Heat Performance: It grows strongly through humid tropical summers that stress many other citrus.
Small Frame: It stays compact enough for a courtyard or a large pot that can be moved under cover in winter.
Thorny Branching: Dense armed growth makes an effective low informal barrier along a boundary.
Ideal Applications
Kitchen garden tree: Positioned within reach of the kitchen it becomes the most used plant on the property.
Tropical courtyard: It suits a warm enclosed courtyard alongside frangipani, ginger and heliconia.
Movable container specimen: In cooler cities a large pot lets the tree be shifted to shelter over winter.
Low informal hedge: Planted in a row it forms a productive thorny edge along a path or fence.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Light, free draining soil around pH 6 to 7. It has no tolerance for waterlogging, so mound the planting position in clay soils and keep drainage lines clear.
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer, tapering off as the canopy fills out, and never allow the plant to wilt while fruit is forming. Mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, feed with citrus fertiliser in spring and late summer, and protect completely from frost.
