Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rangpur Lime - Citrus x limonia
Despite the name it is not a true lime at all. Citrus x limonia is an old hybrid of mandarin and citron that produces loose skinned, orange coloured fruit with juice as sharp as a lemon, and it is the acid, not the colour, that determines how it is used. It is noticeably tougher and more cold tolerant than a true lime, which makes it a sensible choice in southern gardens where a Tahitian lime struggles. Crops are heavy and land mainly through winter.
Why Rangpur Lime
Orange Skinned Acid Fruit: The fruit looks like a mandarin and tastes like a lime, peels easily and juices freely.
Cold Hardiness: It handles light frost far better than true limes once established, extending the range south.
Heavy Winter Crop: Fruit colours and ripens through the cooler months when other limes are finished.
Spreading Canopy: The habit is broad and slightly weeping, giving a soft outline rather than a stiff upright tree.
Rootstock Vigour: The same toughness that makes it a widely used rootstock also makes it a resilient garden tree.
Ideal Applications
Preserving and cordial tree: The high acid juice and loose skin suit marmalade, cordial and pickling.
Espalier on a wall: Its flexible young wood trains readily onto wires against a sunny wall.
Productive screening row: Planted in a line it screens a side boundary while carrying a serious crop.
Large courtyard pot: It fruits well in a big container given regular feeding and consistent moisture.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 2.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m to 5m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, pH 6 to 7, with no standing water at any time of year. Plant slightly proud of the surrounding grade in clay soils and keep the graft union well above soil level.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first summer, reducing frequency as roots reach out into the surrounding soil. Mulch a wide circle held clear of the trunk, keep the trunk base free of weeds and grass, and feed with citrus fertiliser in early spring and again after harvest.
