Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pummelo - Citrus maxima
The pummelo, Citrus maxima, produces the largest fruit in the citrus family, often 15 to 25cm across and well over a kilogram, with a very thick pith and mild sweet flesh that lacks the sharpness of grapefruit. It is the ancestral parent behind grapefruit and much of the sweet orange group, and it grows as a broad-crowned evergreen tree with notably large glossy leaves and winged petioles. In Australia it belongs in the frost-free subtropics and warm coastal districts, where it fruits reliably from autumn into winter.
Why Pummelo
Fruit size: Individual fruit regularly exceed a kilogram, which makes even a light crop a substantial harvest.
Mild sweet flesh: Segments separate cleanly from the pith and eat sweet rather than bitter, unlike grapefruit.
Fragrant blossom: Large white flowers carry the classic citrus perfume through spring.
Bold foliage: Leaves are considerably larger than other citrus, giving the tree a heavier, more tropical look.
Long storage: The thick rind means fruit holds on the tree and keeps well after picking.
Ideal Applications
Backyard orchard: A single tree supplies a household through the winter fruiting window.
Subtropical feature tree: The broad glossy crown works as an ornamental in its own right.
Edible landscape borders: Combines with other citrus in a productive hedge-scale planting.
Large containers: Manageable in a big pot on a warm, sheltered north-facing terrace.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a productive citrus row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m for a full open crown
Best Planting Season: Spring through early summer once frost risk has passed
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free-draining, slightly acid to neutral soil; citrus will not tolerate waterlogged roots
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, keeping the soil evenly moist while fruit is sizing to prevent splitting. Mulch widely but keep it 150mm clear of the trunk, and feed with a complete citrus fertiliser in late winter and again in mid-summer.
