Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sea Grape - Coccoloba uvifera
Very few plants will stand directly in salt spray on an exposed beachfront and still look deliberate rather than battered, and Coccoloba uvifera is one of them. Its leaves are the feature: large, round, leathery plates up to 200mm across with red veins that colour further as individual leaves age and drop. Grown hard on sand in full sun it stays low and windswept, while in a sheltered warm garden it lifts into a small multi trunked tree with sculptural pale grey branches.
Why Sea Grape
Salt Immunity: Tolerates direct coastal salt spray and sandy, nutrient poor soil better than almost any ornamental tree.
Leaf Character: Broad circular leathery leaves with red veining give a bold, graphic texture unmatched by other coastal plants.
Wind Shaping: Responds to onshore wind by growing dense and low, which makes it an effective front line windbreak.
Sculptural Trunks: Mature specimens develop smooth mottled grey bark and a leaning, multi stemmed frame.
Edible Fruit: Female plants carry hanging clusters of purple grape like fruit in late summer, edible and popular with birds.
Ideal Applications
Beachfront Planting: Front row in exposed coastal gardens in the tropics and warm subtropics.
Clipped Coastal Hedge: Trimmed as a bold leaved informal hedge along a boundary in salty air.
Resort and Poolside Feature: Its architectural leaves suit tropical resort planting and it copes with reflected heat.
Sand Stabilisation: Used on dunes and sandy slopes where roots bind loose ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, in frost free districts only
Soil & Drainage: Sharp draining sandy or gravelly soil, tolerant of low fertility and alkaline coastal sands, but intolerant of cold wet clay
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer, then only in extended dry spells once the roots have run. Mulch to hold moisture in sand, feed lightly in spring, and accept that any frost will damage or kill the plant, so it belongs only in frost free coastal zones.
