Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coccothrinax alta
A slender solitary fan palm from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Coccothrinax alta is instantly recognisable by the woven mat of fibre that wraps the young trunk like coarse hessian. The palmate leaves are green above and noticeably paler and silvered beneath, so the whole crown flickers when wind moves through it. Growth is slow and the trunk stays very narrow, which makes this a palm for narrow beds and considered compositions rather than fast effect.
Why Coccothrinax alta
Woven Fibre Trunk: Young stems are sheathed in a natural fibre mesh that is a feature in its own right at close range.
Silvered Leaf Undersides: The pale reverse of each fan catches light and wind, giving movement and shimmer.
Very Slim Trunk: At roughly 10 to 15cm through, it occupies almost no ground space at maturity.
Salt and Wind Hardy: A coastal species by origin, tolerant of exposed beachfront positions.
Predictable Slow Growth: It will not outgrow its position, which matters in tightly designed spaces.
Ideal Applications
Beachfront Garden: Handles salt spray, wind and sharply draining sand better than most feature palms.
Narrow Planting Bed: The slim trunk fits strips along walls and fences where a wider palm would crowd.
Courtyard Grove: Groups of three or five at staggered heights create a fine vertical rhythm.
Poolside Planting: Modest litter and a compact crown suit positions close to water and paving.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3.5m
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer, once soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sand, gravel or limestone derived soils; it tolerates alkaline ground and dislikes heavy wet clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first two summers, after which it becomes markedly drought tolerant. Feed lightly with a palm fertiliser in spring, avoid overfeeding which does not speed this palm up, and site it where frost will not reach it, since it has little cold tolerance.
