Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Malayan Dwarf Coconut Palm - Cocos nucifera ‘Malayan Dwarf’
The dwarf coconut is grown for two practical reasons: it begins bearing years earlier than a tall coconut, and it stays low enough that harvesting and maintenance remain realistic in a garden. Cocos nucifera ‘Malayan Dwarf’ typically starts setting nuts at around four to six years and holds its crown well below the twenty metres or more of the tall types. Everything else is the coconut people picture: a leaning grey trunk, arching feather fronds and a permanent tropical holiday reading.
Why Malayan Dwarf Coconut Palm
Early Bearing: Fruit production starts far sooner than on tall seedling coconuts, which can take a decade or more.
Reachable Crown: A lower mature height keeps frond and nut management within the range of ordinary equipment.
Continuous Cropping: Once mature it carries nuts at every stage of development, so harvest runs through the year.
Salt and Sand Tolerance: Genuinely at home on beachfront sand where almost nothing else will grow.
Classic Silhouette: No other palm reads as unmistakably tropical from a distance.
Ideal Applications
Beachfront Planting: Salt spray and sandy soil suit it, and it stabilises well in exposed coastal ground.
Resort and Pool Landscapes: Provides the defining tropical element in holiday and hospitality settings.
Tropical Driveway Avenue: Evenly spaced palms along an entrance drive create a strong repeating rhythm.
Productive Home Garden: In the true tropics it earns its space with drinking nuts as well as appearance.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m in a grove planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: The start of the wet season, when soil is warm and humidity high
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining sand or sandy loam; it is salt tolerant but will not accept cold heavy clay or a stagnant root zone
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week for the first year and feed with a palm fertiliser high in potassium and magnesium twice annually, as deficiency of both shows quickly in yellowing older fronds. This is a true tropical palm, reliable in Darwin, Cairns, Townsville and similar climates but not in cool or frost prone districts, and mature palms should be sited well clear of paths, seating and parking where a falling nut could cause injury.
