Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Stem Dogwood - Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’
‘Sibirica’ is grown for what it does after the leaves fall. Through winter the young stems of Cornus alba turn a brilliant coral to sealing wax red, and a well managed clump lit by low winter sun is one of the strongest effects available in a cool climate garden. Through the growing season it is a quieter thing: an upright suckering shrub with soft green leaves, flat heads of creamy white flowers in late spring and small pale berries, then red purple autumn colour before the stems take over again.
Why Red Stem Dogwood
Winter stem colour: One to two year old wood carries the strongest red, which is why regular hard pruning is part of growing it well.
Wet soil tolerance: It naturally grows on damp ground and thrives in the soggy corners that kill most ornamental shrubs.
Four season interest: Cream flower heads in late spring, white berries in summer, plum autumn foliage, then red winter stems.
Suckering habit: It spreads slowly from the base to form a thicket, which is ideal for mass planting and bank stabilisation.
Cool climate need: Stem colour is far more intense after a genuinely cold winter, so it is best suited to Tasmania, the southern tablelands, alpine districts and the hills around Melbourne and Adelaide.
Ideal Applications
Winter garden mass planting: Planted in a block of five or more and cut back annually for maximum stem impact.
Creek and pond edges: One of the better shrubs for permanently damp margins and drainage lines.
Informal deciduous screen: Grown unpruned it forms a dense thicket that softens a fence through the warm months.
Bank stabilisation: The suckering root system binds soil on damp slopes and swale batters.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m apart
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or autumn
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from heavy clay to loam, and unusually tolerant of soils that stay wet
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer unless the site is naturally damp, and mulch heavily to hold moisture. From the second or third winter, cut roughly a third of the oldest stems to 100mm above ground each year, or coppice the whole plant hard every second year, because old wood loses its colour.
