Constellation Dogwood - Cornus ‘Constellation’
The Stellar series of dogwoods was bred at Rutgers University by crossing the American flowering dogwood with the Chinese dogwood, producing trees with the flower size of one parent and the vigour and disease resistance of the other. Cornus ‘Constellation’ is the upright one in the group: a vase-shaped tree carrying large white bracts that stay separate rather than overlapping, giving an open, starry effect across the canopy in mid to late spring. It is planted in cool climate Australian gardens where the classic Cornus florida has proved too disease prone.
Why Constellation Dogwood
Disease resistance: Bred for resistance to dogwood anthracnose and borer, the two problems that shorten the life of a florida.
Separated bracts: Four large white bracts held apart from one another, reading as distinct stars rather than a solid disc.
Upright habit: A narrow vase shape when young, which suits smaller gardens and planting near paths.
Mid spring timing: Flowers between the two parent species, extending the dogwood season in a mixed planting.
Autumn colour: Foliage turns red to burgundy in cool districts before dropping.
Ideal Applications
Feature tree: A single specimen in a cool climate front garden where the spring display is the focal point.
Woodland edge: Planted at the margin of taller trees where it receives morning sun and afternoon shelter.
Small garden shade: Provides a light canopy over a courtyard without the root mass of a large tree.
Mixed dogwood grove: Planted with other Stellar hybrids to stretch the flowering period across several weeks.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a grove effect, as dogwoods are not hedged
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while dormant, or early spring in cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Cool, moist, free draining, humus-rich acid to neutral soil. Dogwoods will not tolerate compacted clay, alkaline ground or hot dry root zones
Establishment Care: Water deeply and consistently through the first three summers, since dogwood roots are shallow and dry out quickly. Mulch to 75mm with composted leaf litter or bark over the whole root area and never cultivate beneath the canopy.
