June Snow Dogwood - Cornus controversa ‘June Snow’
The giant dogwood is the tree people call the wedding cake tree, and the reason is structural: branches emerge in distinct horizontal tiers with clear air between each layer. ‘June Snow’ is a selection of Cornus controversa chosen for the weight of its flowering, which covers those tiers in flat creamy-white heads so the whole tree looks like stacked plates of blossom. It is a cool-climate tree, and in the right district it is one of the most architecturally satisfying deciduous specimens available.
Why June Snow Dogwood
Tiered Branching: The layered horizontal habit gives the tree year-round form, most obvious once the leaves drop.
Flowering Weight: Flat cream-white flower heads sit on top of each tier in late spring and early summer.
Autumn Colour: Foliage turns rich purple-red before falling, a genuine second season of interest.
Bird Value: Blue-black berries follow the flowers and are quickly taken by birds.
Climate Requirement: It needs cool conditions, performing in the tablelands, Victoria, Tasmania and the Adelaide Hills rather than warm humid coastal gardens.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: Its tiered shape is best appreciated standing alone with clear space around it.
Cool Climate Entry Statement: A single tree in a front garden gives seasonal drama without excessive size.
Layered Woodland Garden: Sits well above hellebores, ferns and hydrangeas in a cool shaded scheme.
Broad Avenue: Repeated along a country driveway it creates a strong horizontal rhythm in flower.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5-6m for a grove effect
Spacing (feature/avenue): 7-8m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil, acidic to neutral, with reliable drainage. It dislikes both drought and waterlogging, and it will not thrive in shallow alkaline ground.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first three summers, since dogwoods are shallow rooted and suffer quickly in dry spells. Mulch generously with leaf litter or composted bark out to the branch spread, held clear of the trunk, and site it out of hot dry afternoon wind.
