Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Kousa Dogwood - Cornus kousa
Cornus kousa flowers after it comes into leaf, which is the practical difference between it and the American dogwood: the pointed white bracts sit above a green canopy rather than on bare wood, and they hold for four to six weeks. It follows with knobbly red fruit that look like small strawberries, then turns crimson in autumn. In Australia it is strictly a cool climate tree, at home in the Southern Highlands, the Dandenongs, the Adelaide Hills and Tasmania.
Why Kousa Dogwood
Long Bract Display: The bracts are papery and durable, giving one of the longest spring displays of any small deciduous tree.
Tiered Form: Growth builds in horizontal layers, so the tree looks deliberate even in winter with no leaves on it.
Three Seasons: Bracts in late spring, red fruit through summer into autumn, then crimson and purple leaf colour.
Bark: Older trunks flake into a mottled tan and grey patchwork worth clearing the lower limbs to expose.
Disease Resistance: It is markedly less prone to the anthracnose problems that trouble Cornus florida in humid seasons.
Ideal Applications
Small lawn specimen: The tiered canopy is best seen in the open with room around it.
Courtyard tree: Modest roots and a controlled crown make it safe near paving and walls.
Understorey to tall deciduous trees: It grows well in the filtered light beneath oaks, elms and birches.
Entry and approach planting: A pair either side of a drive gives a long, quiet spring display in cool districts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not used as a hedge, group at 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter, June to August, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Acid to neutral, humus rich and moisture retentive but never boggy; it does poorly on alkaline or shallow soils
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first three summers, because a dry spell during leaf expansion sets the tree back for a full season. Mulch widely to 75mm with leaf litter, keep it off the trunk, and hold back on nitrogen fertiliser which produces soft growth at the cost of flower.
