Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Chinese Dogwood - Cornus kousa var. chinensis
The Chinese form of kousa dogwood flowers later than the American dogwoods and does it after the leaves are out, so the pointed white bracts sit above a full green canopy rather than on bare wood. Cornus kousa var. chinensis is also the tougher, more sun-tolerant of the ornamental dogwoods, with larger bracts that age to soft pink, odd raspberry-like fruit in autumn and mottled tan bark on older trunks. Autumn foliage runs to crimson and bronze, giving three distinct seasons of interest from one small tree.
Why Chinese Dogwood
Late Flowering: Bracts open in late spring to early summer, well after the rush of early blossom is over.
Bracts Above Foliage: The display is held on top of the leaf canopy, which is why it reads so strongly from a distance.
Ornamental Fruit: Pendulous red, raspberry-like fruit hangs on the tree through autumn.
Exfoliating Bark: Mature trunks develop a mottled tan, grey and cream patchwork.
Hardiness: More tolerant of sun, cold and general garden conditions than the flowering dogwoods it is often compared to.
Ideal Applications
Small garden specimen: A four-season tree for a courtyard or compact cool climate garden.
Entry or window feature: Positioned so the horizontal flowering layer is viewed from above or from indoors.
Understorey beneath tall trees: Happy in the filtered light at the edge of an established canopy.
Mixed acid-soil border: Sits well with azaleas, camellias, maples and woodland perennials.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a grouped planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus rich, free draining and slightly acid, will not tolerate dry limey soil or standing water
Establishment Care: Mulch deeply and keep the root zone cool, since surface roots are the first thing to suffer in a hot Australian summer. Water deeply and regularly for the first three summers and prune only lightly, in winter, to remove crossing branches.
