Weavers Weeping Dogwood - Cornus kousa ‘Weavers Weeping’
A weeping selection of the Chinese dogwood, this is a small tree that flowers late enough to miss the frosts that spoil so many spring ornamentals. Cornus kousa ‘Weavers Weeping’ holds its branches in a cascading skirt, and in late spring to early summer the whole framework is lined with four-pointed creamy white bracts held above the foliage so they appear to float. Autumn brings crimson and burgundy leaf colour along with knobbly red fruit, which is why it is chosen ahead of a flowering cherry in cool climate gardens where a longer season of interest is wanted.
Why Weavers Weeping
Late Flowering: Bracts open once frost risk has passed, so the display is far more reliable than early spring blossom.
Weeping Framework: Branches arch and descend, forming a soft dome that is attractive even when bare.
Bracts Held Upward: The white bracts sit above the leaves rather than under them, so the display reads strongly from a distance.
Autumn Finish: Foliage turns deep crimson to purple, joined by rounded red fruit resembling small strawberries.
Cool Climate Plant: It needs winter chill and moist soil, so it belongs in Victoria, Tasmania, the Adelaide Hills, the NSW tablelands and similar districts.
Ideal Applications
Woodland Edge: Planted where it receives morning sun and afternoon protection from taller deciduous trees.
Lawn Specimen: Standing alone, the weeping outline is clear from every angle.
Entry Courtyard: Small enough for a tight space and interesting through all four seasons.
Beside a Path or Seat: The low, arching habit brings flowers and autumn colour down to eye level.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; 3m apart if grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus rich, slightly acidic soil that drains freely; alkaline or dry soils cause leaf scorch
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers and never let it wilt, as dogwoods are shallow rooted and unforgiving of drought. Mulch generously with composted leaf litter across the full root spread and shelter it from hot dry wind.
